Unintentional Autumn
Friday evening I gathered sunflower plates and brown checked napkins for the patio table.
I was thinking late Summer and Sunflowers, but the setting took on a mind of it’s own, as if it could actually feel the air and see the soft golden slant of the sun.
Before I knew what was happening, the siren song of Autumnal Equinox was calling my name.
The mystical call was so strong I allowed myself to follow. The table evolved.
School began for our grandchildren last week. We still, after all these years, marvel at August school openings.
Our first day of school was always the day after Labor Day. A more Autumn feel was in the air, along with the sound of band practice and Friday night football. That first game signaled the time was right to bring out the sweaters and wool skirts. We didn’t want to rush the season, even in those blissful 50’s and 60’s school days.
I am listening to oldies, as I compose this post. Perhaps those good old songs are guiding my thoughts.
As I finished the Sunflower table, I thought it might be inspiration for your Fall table, just as much as the magazines and websites provide Autumn inspiration a month or two before the season.
Store these Autumn ideas and others away for another 3 or 4 weeks. Allow them to age until September 22 arrives bringing Fall. Or decorate now. What matters is what you want to do.
After the table was set and photos were shot, J and I enjoyed a nicely chilled Riesling on the patio.
We are savoring these last days of an absolutely glorious Summer and looking forward to our favorite season, Autumn. We aren’t wishing away our days worrying about what follows Autumn. We prefer to cross that bridge when we come to it.
