Our home is full brick. The concrete foundation is covered with manmade stone to mimic stone foundations in Historic Saint Charles. This stone and the retaining wall, beside the steps to the back porch, give the patio a sort of courtyard feel.
The sofa and coffee table are pieces from a set that includes two chairs, we are using on the back porch. The green cushions were included with purchase (Sam’s). The blue and green pillows are from Lowe’s. The yellow pillow is from Pier 1 Imports.

Potted herb and Jade plant, iron bunny several years old and a Nell Hill’s lantern, purchased when we toured Mary Carol Garrity’s home at Christmas a few years ago. Marble candlestick, HomeGoods.
The rug was brought from the back porch. It is square and a tad small. I want to see how an outdoor rug holds up on the patio before purchasing a larger new one. I like the colors and square shape of this rug, I found at Overstock.com, last year.
Lanterns on either side of the french doors that lead into J’s lodge, are from Kohl’s. Because they are for interior use, we bring them in on rainy days and each evening.
The outdoor fan is from Lowe’s a couple of years ago. We definitely needed it, last Thursday, when we were finishing the patio for Summer 2013.
Here is a closer look at the fan.
The pump (non-functioning) is one we found at a country auction at least 25 years ago. In the background are our drought stricken Endless Summer Hydrangeas. Not a single bloom this year, after the drought last Summer. We are holding hope. These Hydrangeas were hit with an early Spring ice storm a few years ago and survived.
J found the bird cage, on the side of the road, several years ago. It was missing the bottom, so we improvised with a spray painted pizza pan. The bird is a tea light holder found at an old Welcome Home store. We used the cage on the deck at our lake condo, several years.
J painted the table and chairs black and added new tiles to the top. We replaced the coral umbrella with the beige. The coral umbrella found a home on our daughter’s deck.
I found the striped outdoor cushions at HomeGoods awhile back. It was like it was meant to be. Those colors are perfect with the green cushions on the other furniture and it wasn’t even planned.
The fireplace was a gift from the kids several years ago.
The Show Me pillow is from Kijsa Housman.
We are talking about a pergola over the patio. What is that Lowe’s jingle…”don’t stop improving”? We’ll see. As for this season, the patio is finished.
Looking from the french doors toward the back yard and the wet weather creek/ravine beyond.
We chose this lot specifically for those trees, plus our lot backs onto a neighboring farm. Even though we have nearby neighboring homes, our patio and porch still have a bit of a cozy secluded feel.
